What is an inquiry?

An "inquiry" is a record of the name of a credit grantor, or authorized user who has accessed your credit file also known as Credit Report. Each inquiry is posted to the credit file so you know who and when has obtained a copy of it. No inquiry is posted on Consumer's credit file when the Consumer checks own Credit Report.

There are three more types of inquiries besides creditor and personal ones. Following inquiries display only to you and are not considered when evaluating your credit worthiness.

Pre-approved credit grantors post an inquiry before offering you a pre-approval credit card. These are listed as "promotional" or PRM inquiries on your credit file because only your name and address were accessed, not your credit history information. They are NOT sent to credit grantors or businesses for reasons of Credit Reporting. They are listed for your informational purposes only and remain on file for 12 months.

Account Monitoring and Account Review which periodically performed by you present creditors to review your account. These types of inquiries may be abbreviated to AM and AR respectively. Both of them remain on your credit file for 12 month as well as promotional inquiry.

Credit bureau may initiate an internal inquiry in response to your own request of credit file or request of research. Different Credit bureaus will abbreviate this type of inquiry in their own ways so you can encounter with ID, ACIS, UPDATE or event more mysterious abbreviations. Do not be confused with ones since most likely they are well documented in supplementary help systems and neither of these impacts your Credit score.
